Die besten Ideen werden manchmal aus der Not geboren. Eine ganze CD mit Schlafliedern aufzunehmen, wäre Luka Bloom, dessen Spiel und Gesang eigentlich für Energie und Kraft steht, vermutlich kaum in den Sinn gekommen. Doch gesundheitliche Probleme mit seiner rechten Hand führten im Herbst des letzten Jahres dazu, die elektrische Gitarre für eine gewisse Zeit aus seinem Instrumentarium zu verbannen und eine neue, komplett akustische Technik für sich zu entwickeln, die in ihrem Minimalismus eine ruhige, balladeske Seite in ihm weckte. Mit den Lebensgeistern kehrte auch der Wille zurück, diese Zeit im Studio zu dokumentieren. Luka Bloom erklärt: „I found myself singing and writing whispery songs. So I went to The Old Mill, near Naas … and recorded these tracks over two nights. Late at night, with the wind blowing. I recorded these tracks when I was tired myself. This is a cd of non-performance. It’s purpose is to help bring you closer to sleep, our sometimes elusive night-friend.“ Damit ist auch gut beschrieben, dass diese Songs, ein Mix aus einigen Neu – Kompositionen und Traditionals wie z. B. „The Water Is Wide“, dem Hörer vor allem den Weg aus dem hektischen Alltag zu einer ruhigen, dem Ende des Tages zugewandte Seite weisen soll.
There are times when the best ideas are born in an hour of need. With his mainstay of playing and singing that usually evokes images of energy and power, recording an entire CD of bedtime lullabies is something that might well never have occurred to Luka Bloom. In this case, problems arising in the fall of last year from a not-so-healthy right hand caused the electric guitar to be banned from active use for a while. He ended up developing a new, completely acoustic technique for himself whose minimalistic aspects awoke his quiet, more balladesque side. With reviving spirits the will returned to document this period in the studio. As Luka Bloom tells it: "I found myself singing and writing whispery songs.
