Martin Tingvall, der sich in Genres wie Filmmusik, Klassik, Jazz oder Pop gleichermaßen bewegt, spielt auf diesem Album scheinbar einfach klingende, ergreifend schöne Melodien, die mal Assoziationen von Klassik herbeizaubern, mal seine Herkunft aus der skandinavische Volksmusik spiegeln und im nächsten Moment der Improvisationsfreiheit des Jazz nahestehen. Längst hat er gängige Genregrenzen hinter sich gelassen und seine ganz eigene Tingvall – Klangwelt aus unterschiedlichen Inspirationsquellen geschaffen.  
Zum Entstehungsprozess seines vierten Solo – Albums „When Light Returns“ erklärt er: „Vor einem Jahr schien die Welt plötzlich still zu stehen. Als würde die Menschheit den Atem anhalten über den ersten Schock der Pandemie. Gleichzeitig war dieses Frühjahr in Nordeuropa ungewöhnlich schön. Wochenlang strahlte die Sonne vom Himmel, die Knospen der Pflanzen und die Insekten kamen früher als sonst nach dem langen skandinavischen Winter.“ Nach einer Amerika – Reise zu dieser Zeit in seinem Haus in Südschweden gestrandet, komponierte er hier extrem konzentriert und fokussiert dieses neue Album. „Ich war in dieser Zeit viel draußen in der Natur. Während dieses menschlichen Stillstands erschien mir die Kraft der Natur umso stärker – wie ein Zeichen, welches uns Menschen zeigen wollte, dass wir nicht aufgeben sollen.“ Die Kompositionen sind im März 2020 innerhalb weniger Tage entstanden und unmittelbar danach aufgenommen worden. „Für mich ist dieses Album ein Hoffnungssymbol. Auch wenn es scheint, dass es nicht mehr weitergehen wird, selbst nach dem dunkelsten Winter, kehrt das Licht im Frühling zurück.“

Martin Tingvall is a recording artist who feels equally at home in the realms of film scores, the classics, jazz or pop. On this new release his fingers dance over seemingly simple-sounding yet grippingly lovely melodies. At times they conjure up associations with classical themes, others reflect his origins stemming from Scandinavian folk music, only to stride on in the next moment to an improvisational freedom closely tied to jazz. He has long since left commonplace genre borderlands behind him to create his very own Tingvall world of sounds comprised of a variety of inspirational sources. 

Asked about the formative process behind “When Light Returns”, his fourth solo album, he explains: “A year ago the world suddenly seemed to stand still. As if humanity were holding its breath in response to the first shock of the pandemic. At the same time, this was an unusually beautiful spring in northern Europe. The sunshine beamed down from the sky for weeks on end, the buds on plants and the insects came earlier than usual after the long Scandinavian winter.” Stranded in his house in southern Sweden following a trip to the USA, he composed day in, day out, intensely concentrated and extremely focused on this new album. “I was outdoors a lot during that time. Over the course of this human standstill the power of nature appeared that much stronger to me – like a sign that wanted to show us human beings that we shouldn’t give up.” The compositions arose in March 2020 within a matter of days and were recorded directly afterward. “To me, this album is a symbol of hope. Even when it seems as if there’s nowhere left to go, even after the darkest winter, the light returns in spring.”
