Mit „The Coltrane Hartman Fantasy“ lassen Tony Lakatos und Kevin Mahogany den Geist des 1962 zum Jazzklassiker gewordenen Balladenalbums von John Coltrane und Johnny Hartman wiederaufleben, verfolgen aber gleichzeitig auch Gedankenspiele, was gewesen wäre, wenn es zu einer Fortführung dieser Kollaboration gekommen wäre. Dabei nehmen sie sich mehr Zeit, als einfach nur die Stücke von damals wieder aufzunehmen, vielmehr gehen sie mehr unter die Oberfläche, betrachten das Repertoire von Coltrane und Hartman aus jener Zeit und spielen, was so nie stattgefunden hat. Was Tony Lakatos und Kevin Mahogany in ihrem Dialog finden, ist die Zeitlosigkeit von Kompositionen, die in der Eleganz der Interpretation kein Verfallsdatum zulassen. Unterstützt von Thomas Rückert am Piano, der in sehr geschmackvoller Weise sowohl solistisch als auch im Zusammenspiel der Rhythmusgruppe in Erscheinung tritt, Henning Gailing, seinem Kölner Mitstreiter am Kontrabass sowie dem Schlagzeuger Martijn Vink.
In a phase when he zoomed from one sax zenith to the next, Coltrane recorded an LP of ballads with baritone Johnny Hartman in 1962 that displayed a completely different side to this icon of saxophone-playing . On “The Coltrane Hartman Fantasy”, Tony Lakatos and Kevin Mahogany let that spirit come alive once again while simultaneously pursuing the playful train of thought: What would have happened if there had been a sequel to the inspiring collaboration from way back when? We’re not talking about a simple rehash recording recollected tunes. These two musicians dive deeply below the surface to gaze at the Coltrane/Hartman repertoire at the time and play what didn’t make it onto tape. What Tony Lakatos and Kevin Mahogany reveal in their dialog is the timelessness of pieces which, when presented with elegance, leave no room for a ‘best by’ date. Supported by Thomas Rückert on piano, tasteful both as a soloist and in the way the rhythm section interacts on each tune, Henning Gailing, his compatriot from Cologne on double bass, and drummer Martijn Vink.
