Zu den wichtigsten Formaten in Omar Sosas Aufnahmetätigkeit gehören seine Solo – Einspielungen. Hier kann er sich emotional so unmittelbar ausdrücken wie sonst nirgendwo, egal ob es „A New Life“ (SKP 9041) anlässlich der Geburt seines Sohnes Lonius war, die ersten Begegnungen mit eingespielten Samples beim live im Sendesaal von Radio Bremen aufgenommenen „Aleatoric EFX“ (SKP 9086) oder 2011 das in seiner Tiefe so berührende Album „Calma“ (SKP 9102). Mit dem neuen Solo – Album „Senses“ (SKP 9121) vertieft er sich noch intensiver in die Zwiesprache mit sich selbst und erreicht eine Spiritualität, die nur selten erreicht wird.
Anlässlich eines „artist in residence“ - Projektes am New Yorker EMPAC , bei dem er Musik für das Tanztheater – Stück „Miriam“ von Nora Chipaumire aus Zimbabwe komponierte, nutze er die herausragenden Rahmenbedingungen, die ihm ein Yamaha CF III – Flügel dort bot, um sich spät abends im abgedunkelten Studio dem Fluss seiner Gedanken und den daraus resultierenden musikalischen Improvisationen hinzugeben. Herausgekommen sind dabei 16 musikalische Miniaturen, die vor allem eines ausstrahlen: tiefenentspannte Ruhe. Omar Sosa kommentiert selbst die Essenz der Musik: „I feel peaceful. I feel love for the sake of love. The pieces are musical journeys, during which my Cuban roots emerge in unusual, deconstructed ways.”
Dem dreimal für den Grammy nominierten und 2011 mit dem ECHO Jazz ausgezeichneten Pianisten aus Kuba, der in Barcelona und auf Menorca lebt, gelingt es einmal mehr, in berührender Form musikalische Gänsehautmomente zu erschaffen, vollkommen frei, vollkommen improvisiert und von betörender Schönheit.
Pianists and their preferences are a legendary chapter in the history of recorded music. For Omar Sosa, the solo recordings have represented a key expressive format in his impressive discology, an unparalleled opportunity for emotions to unfold. “A New Life” (SKP 9041) celebrated the birth of his son, Lonius. Experimental encounters with pretaped samples were introduced live at broadcaster Radio Bremen on “Aleatoric EFX” (SKP 9086), attaining greater breadth and depth on the touching album “Calma” (SKP 9102) in 2011. As the name implies, “Senses” (SKP 9121), the new solo album, reaches out to intensify the inner dialog Sosa holds in an effort to achieve a seldom-experienced audible spirituality.
A stint in an ‘artist in residence’ project at the EMPAC multivenue complex in New York gave Omar Sosa the chance to compose the music for “Miriam”, a dance-theater piece by Nora Chipaumire from Zimbabwe. It also allowed him to make the most of the excellent attributes offered by a Yamaha CF III concert grand. Late in the evenings with the studio lights dimmed low, he let his thoughts flow and abandoned himself to musical improvisation. What emerged from these ‘sessions’ are 16 miniatures that radiate one thing above all else: the deepest of tranquility. As the composer himself commented on the music’s essence: “I feel peaceful. I feel love for the sake of love. The pieces are musical journeys during which my Cuban roots emerge in unusual, deconstructed ways.”
Nominated 3 times for a Grammy and awarded the ECHO Jazz prize in 2011, this pianist from Cuba who divides his time between living in Barcelona and the island of Menorca has once again created musical ‘goose-bump moments’ in a tangible way: completely free, completely improvised, and in captivating beauty.
