Omar Sosa traut sich was, die Tatsache, dass er immer wieder mit unerwarteten Wendungen seinem Ouevre Würze verleiht, zieht sich wie ein roter Faden durch die lange Reihe seiner Veröffentlichungen. Mehrere Grammy - Nominierungen und zuletzt ein ECHO JAZZ 2011 für die „Beste Bigband Einspielung des Jahres“ (SKP 9092 „Ceremony“) stehen für das hohe Kritikerlob, das er seit jeher einheimst. Auf das große Ensemble – Werk folgte mit dem fast meditativen Solo - Album „Calma“ (SKP 9102) seine vielleicht poetischste Produktion überhaupt, die besonders von seinem Publikum gefeiert wurde.

Mit „Eggūn: The Afri – Lectric Experience“ wendet er sich nun einem seiner großen Vorbilder und musikalischen Helden zu, Miles Davis. Das Album enthält sein 2009 anlässlich des 50jährigen Jahrestages der Einspielung des vielleicht erfolgreichsten Albums der Jazz – Geschichte „Kind Of Blue“ entstandenes Auftragswerk für das Barcelona Jazz Festival.  Inspiriert von Elementen und Motiven von „Kind Of Blue“ entwickelt der kubanische Pianist getreu den Davis’schen Prinzipien ein eigenständiges Werk, das Spontanität, Freiheit, Originalität und Versunkenheit atmet und seinesgleichen sucht. Das Ergebnis:  „Kind Of Blue“ wird aus den musikalischen Wurzeln Afrikas (einem weiteren großen Thema von Omar Sosa) heraus mit seinen elektronischen Möglichkeiten in eine Jazz – Welt des 21sten Jahrhunderts entwickelt“. Eggūn sind in der westafrikanischen Ifa – Lehre die Geister der von uns Gegangenen im Familienkreis und auch der spirituellen Führer. Ganz im Geiste vieler legendärer Miles Davis – Sessions der 60er und 70er Jahre nimmt Omar Sosa eine Vielzahl von Musikern mit auf die Reise durch Sounds und Vibes. In seinem festen neuen Groß – Ensemble mit drei Bläsern, fallen dem ECHO JAZZ 2012 ausgezeichneten Joo Kraus an der Trompete, dem in Hamburg lebenden Kubaner Leandro Saint – Hill am Alt Saxofon, Flöte und Klarinette  sowie dem gebürtigen New Yorker Peter Apfelbaum an diversen Saxofonen dabei die Aufgabe zu, die Welt des Jazz diametral zu vermessen und Klangräume aufzuschließen. Seine langjährige Rhythmusgruppe mit dem in Stockholm ansässigen Amerikaner Marque Gilmore, der den vielleicht härtesten Punch der aktuellen Jazz – Schlagzeug - Szene zu bieten hat sowie Childo Tomas aus Mozambique  am Bass  bietet darunter ein rhythmisches Fundament von magischer Dimension an. Lionel Loueke (Benin) und Marvin Sewell an den Gitarren sowie Gustavo Ovalles (bereits bekannt von der Sosa Duo - Produktion „Ayaguna“ / Venezuela), John Santos (langjähriger Mitstreiter von Sosa in seiner San Francisco Phase / USA) und Pedro Martinez (Kuba) vervollständigen an unterschiedlichsten Percussion Instrumenten das Line – Up.

Für den fortgeschrittenen Hörer mögen zum Beispiel sechs Interludes von speziellem Interesse sein, in denen Sosa sich von den Soli des „Kind Of Blue“ - Pianisten Bill Evans hat inspirieren lassen, man kann sich aber „Eggūn“, dem „Kind Of Blue“ Trip 2013, allerdings auch einfach in seiner Schönheit hingeben und den magischen Fluss dieses Werkes zulassen. Ein großer Wurf !!!

Omar Sosa dares to venture. The fact that he employs unexpected twists time and again to lend a certain spice to his ‘works’ extends like a guiding line across the long series of his publications to date. Several Grammy nominations, and most recently an ECHO JAZZ 2011 award for the “Best Big-Band Recording of the Year”  (SKP 9092 “Ceremony”), go hand-in-hand with the effusive praise he has won from critics from the very beginning. This production composed for a large ensemble was followed by “Calma” (SKP 9102), an almost meditative solo album reflected in its name and perhaps his most poetic work; a work that received particular acclaim from his listening audience.

With “Eggūn: The Afri-Lectric Experience” he is now turning to one of his great role models and musical idols: none other than Miles Davis. This album contains the ‘ouevre’ Omar Sosa was commissioned to compose for the Barcelona Jazz Festival in 2009 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the recording of “Kind Of Blue”, what may very well be the most successful album in the history of Jazz. While remaining true to Davis’s principles and inspired by the elements and motifs on “Kind Of Blue”, the Cuban pianist evolves a work of its own that breathes spontaneity, freedom, originality and thought-immersed absorption on an unparalleled scale. The result: Through the electronic possibilities at Sosa’s command, “Kind Of Blue” is taken from its musical roots in Africa (another of Omar Sosa’s major themes) and immersed in a 21st century Jazz world. In the “Ifa” teachings of West Africa Eggūn are the spirits of the departed within a family circle, including the spiritual leader. Fully in keeping with the spirit of many legendary Miles Davis sessions in the 1960s and ’70s, Omar Sosa takes a number of musicians along on this journey across sounds & vibes. This fixed, new large-scale ensemble includes 3 horns: ECHO JAZZ 2012 award-winner Joo Kraus on trumpet, Leandro Saint-Hill, a native Cuban, on alto sax, flute and clarinet, and Peter Apfelbaum, a native New Yorker, on various saxophones. Their task is to diametrically survey the world of Jazz and unlock audiophonic spaces. Among other talents, a foundation of magical dimensions is supplied by Sosa’s long-time rhythm section: Marque Gilmore, a native of the USA based in Stockholm who has what is perhaps the hardest-hitting punch on the current Jazz drummer scene, and Childo Tomas from Mozambique on bass. Lionel Loueke (Benin) and Marvin Sewell (USA), both on guitar, and Gustavo Ovalles (from Venezuela, already known due to the Sosa duo production “Ayaguna”), John Santos (a companion of Sosa’s from the USA for years during his San Francisco phase) and Pedro Martinez (Cuba) complete the line-up by playing the widest variety of percussion instruments.

Six interludes could be of specialist interest to ‘advanced’ listeners, pieces on which Sosa let himself be inspired by Bill Evans, the expertly comping and solo pianist on “Kind Of Blue”. On the other hand, why not simply abandon yourself to the beauty of “Eggūn”, the “Kind Of Blue” trip for 2013, and let its magic flow. A major achievement !!!
