Mit dem grammy-nominierten Album „Sentir“ schaffte der kubanische Pianist Omar Sosa endlich auch in den USA den Durchbruch, so schrieb die „Los Angeles Times“ über ihn Anfang des Jahres: „He has all the traits necessary to become one of the most important figures in jazz“, der „Down Beat“ sieht seine Bedeutung in einer Reihe mit Größen wie Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, McCoy Tyner und Chucho Valdés und „Billboard“ hörte in seinem neuesten Werk „Ayaguna“ nicht nur „one of the finest live jazz albums in recent memory“ sondern zog Parallelen zu den Inspirationsflüssen von Keith Jarrett’s Solo-Konzerten.
Mit „A New Life“ wendet sich Omar Sosa folgerichtig, und nur ein halbes Jahr nach seiner letzten Veröffentlichung, mit einem Solo-Album an seine Hörer. Nach „Omar Omar“ (1996) und „Inside“ (2000) handelt es sich dabei bereits um seine dritte Solo – Einspielung, doch während die Vorgänger sich hauptsächlich als Miniaturen, Skizzen und Ausgangspunkte seiner späteren opulenten Band - Aufnahmen interpretieren lassen, legt der mittlerweile in Barcelona lebende Pianist dieses Mal ein Werk vor, das totaler Improvisation folgt und wenn auch mit ganz anderen Einflüssen unterlegt, durchaus Vergleiche zu zeitlosen Aufnahmen wie Keith Jarrett’s „Bremen Lausanne“ – Konzerten zuläßt.
„A New Life“ ist dabei motiviert und emotional verankert in dem Erlebnis der Geburt seines ersten Sohnes Lonious Said im vergangenen Jahr. Diese Eindrücke und Gefühle aufnehmend, lotet Sosa in frei improvisierten Passagen die gesamte Bandbreite seines Instruments aus, erforscht die Möglichkeiten des Pianos in unterschiedlichsten Formen und hält Zwiesprache mit sich selbst. Das ist um so bemerkenswerter, als Omar Sosa eigentlich als der große Kommunikator unter den Pianisten gilt, der permanent Begegnungen mit neuen Musikern sucht und kaum einmal die Konstanz als Bezugspunkt seiner Kunst Einzug halten läßt.
Nach einer Begegnung mit dem Oakland Symphony Orchestra, die zu Beginn des Jahres ein Werk von Sosa und unter seiner Leitung aufführten, dem Dialog Percussion/Piano seiner letzten CD und einigen raren Band - Konzerten ist es nun also die spontane Momentaufnahme einer Auseinandersetzung mit sich selbst, zu der uns dieser hyper-kreative Künstler einlädt. „A New Life“ ist sicherlich die persönlichste Aufnahme, die jemals von Omar Sosa auf Tonträger gebannt worden ist.

With "A New Life", Omar Sosa consequently addresses his listeners with a solo album, and only half a year after his last release. After "Omar Omar" (1996) and "Inside" (2000), this is already his third solo recording, but while the predecessors can be interpreted mainly as miniatures, sketches and starting points of his later opulent band recordings, this time the pianist, who now lives in Barcelona, presents a work that follows total improvisation and, albeit underpinned by completely different influences, comparisons to timeless recordings such as Keith Jarrett's "Bremen Lausanne" concerts.
"A New Life" is motivated and emotionally anchored in the experience of the birth of his first son Lonious Said last year. Absorbing these impressions and feelings, Sosa explores the entire range of his instrument in freely improvised passages, explores the possibilities of the piano in a wide variety of forms and holds a dialogue with himself. This is all the more remarkable because Omar Sosa is actually considered the great communicator among pianists, who constantly seeks encounters with new musicians and hardly ever allows constancy to find its way into his art as a point of reference.
After an encounter with the Oakland Symphony Orchestra, which performed a work by Sosa and under his direction at the beginning of the year, the percussion/piano dialogue of his last CD and some rare band concerts, it is now the spontaneous snapshot of a confrontation with himself to which this hyper-creative artist invites us. "A New Life" is certainly the most personal recording ever recorded by Omar Sosa.
