Like breezes in the summer - wonderful tunes from three phantastic vocalists: Paula Morelenbaum, Caro Josée and Peter Fessler

With “Samba Preludio”, the incipient Bossarenova Trio featuring Paula Morelenbaum on vocals, Joo Kraus on trumpet, spoken word & beatbox, and Ralf Schmid on piano & electronics delivered a melancholy soundtrack interfaced between classical, jazz and South American music. Now, on the album “Atlantico” recorded in Rio de Janeiro and Berlin, the trio has evolved its ‘grooving’ side and kicks off in Rio’s quarter renowned for its samba sounds.  Driven by electronic space tools played by Joo Kraus and Ralf Schmid, and reinforced by Brazilian guest percussionists Amoy Ribas and Marcio Tubino pulsating grooves intimately close to samba and Brazilectro arise that are vibrantly charged by Paula Morelenbaum’s vocal lines and phrasing. Compositions by Caetano Veloso, Ivan Lins, Chico Buarque, Marcos Valle and Edu Lobo are recomposed while the ensemble steadily reworks the language it speaks so well: “playful, deep and cutting-edge, uniting Brazil, Germany and the world.”

With “Summers Ease” Caro Josèe is ‘back with a vengeance’: bursting with moods and stylish elegance. “Summer’s Ease stands for an attitude toward life because the stories I tell are mainly set in warmer regions. Whether Ibiza, Laguna Beach, Liguria or the Cote d’Azur, all of them are part of my life." “Summer’s Ease” breathes Easy Listening and Jazz while showcasing Caro Josee as a modern songwriter and vocalist with originality to spare. She hisses and whispers, surfs velvety-smooth on melancholy reminiscences, then wonderfully phrases her way across the world, light as a feather. An album of quotes and comments, at times tongue-in-cheek, other times almost in the mood of a black & white film from the ’50s. Tango themes are set against sounds that parody the US crime series from the ’70s  The soundtrack of the upoming spring, nothing ‘off-the-rack’, more an ingenious synthesis concealed behind seeming simplicity. Oblivious to prepackaged categories and a source of ample light on the uniqueness that is Caro Josée.

Peter Fessler is once again deftly juggling a liaison of the widest variety of styles. With an undisguised, easygoing virtuosity, he combines song material from the American songbook (Somewhere Over The Rainbow), highlights from Brazilian music lore (Black Orfeo, Tristeza, Little Boat) and self-composed tunes into a mixture that both vocally and instrumentally stands out on its own. An intimate give-and-take of voice and guitar. At times borne by a lightness reminiscent of classical etudes, other times driven by a willingness to risk it all on that one note, chord-laced jazz licks are enhanced by "vocal sounds" to generate a style mix of jazz / classical / songs and melody. Finely timed thrills and fills from such outstanding musicians as the German top - saxophone player Peter Weniger or that ace of so many musical graces, Wolfgang Haffner (cymbals), along with an atmosphere spiced with just the right amount of genteel feel from steady band members Alfonso Garrido (percussion) and Dave King (bass), create the space where Fessler is not only able to spread out vocally: his Brazilian-hued guitar-playing also receives a chance to share the limelight. The album reached No.25 in the German Jazz Charts.
