Mit „Mad Clown’s Dreams“ der Pianist den Weg konsequent seinen Weg weiter und wendet sich einem Terrain ohne Sicherheitsnetz - dem Solo - Piano zu, dem der überwiegende Teil des Albums gewidmet ist. Dabei treibt er die komplexen harmonischen Strukturen und seine extremen Formen des Improvisierens zu virtuosen und überraschenden Wendungen. Gleichzeitig respektlos und inspiriert paraphrasiert er im Opener Chopin's "Etude No.6 Op.10" und erschließt damit ebenso neue Sichten auf das Original wie in der so noch nicht gehörten Version von "Take Five", die dem Klassiker neue Spannung und Unvorhersehbarkeit verleiht. Egal ob er im atemberaubenden "Bauer Gigue" Tradition und Moderne einander umspielen läßt oder im "Caucasian Dance" Jazz mit Klassik und Folk mit Jazz vermengt, sein Spiel ist stets auf der Suche nach dem Ausdruck, der über die reine Technik hinausweist. Es sind die Visionen eines verrückten Clowns, der mal sanft und nachdenklich wie in "Sunshine In A Honey Pot", mal gewaltig und instinktiv daherkommt. In diesem wogenden Meer aus Emotionen und Virtuosität bilden fünf Duette mit dem legendären Kontrabassisten Jimmy Woode Oasen der Ruhe und Besinnung. Der Bassist verströmt in Stücken wie "Sophisticated Lady", "These Foolish Things" oder "Darn That Dream" eine Gelassenheit, die Gazarov zu einem sensiblen Duett - Partner werden lässt, der in die Zwiesprache der musikalischen Begegnung eintaucht.
On "Mad Clown's Dreams", Gazarov pursues his path with tenacity, exploring new musical terrain by dedicating the predominant part of the album to solo piano excursions. The intimacy he creates is riven with complex harmonic structures, with improvisational extremes that reflect virtuosity and take on surprising twists. At the same time undaunted and inspired by the composer, he paraphrases the opening track, Chopin's "Etude No. 6 Op. 10", revealing new insights into the original piece. The same is very much true of his version of "Take Five", one that has never been heard like this before and imparts the classic with a new excitement and unpredictability. Whether he allows the traditional to swirl around the modern, as in the breath-taking "Bauer Gigue", or blends jazz with classic and folk on "Caucasian Dance", his playing continuously searches for a form of expression that rises above pure technique. The listener is literally reminded of the visions a mad clown would dream, like "Sunshine In A Honey Pot" gentle and contemplative, other times violent and primal in their origins. Five duets with legendary bass player Jimmy Woode build oases of tranquility and reflection in this turbulent sea of emotions and virtuosity. The Bassist exudes a "cool as a cucumber" calmness on such tracks as "Sophisticated Lady", "These Foolish Things" or "Darn That Dream" that give Gazarov the chance to display his skills as a sensitive duet partner, one who immerses himself in the ensuing musical dialogue.
