Simphiwe Dana : The One Love Movement On Bantu Biko Street |
 |
| |
The second album of Simphiwe Dana sets forth the path she has chosen for herself: self-written compositions covering topics like politics and the family melded into melodies and rhythms that can stand on their own; the whole fed from an interplay of South African roots and contemporary Pop and Jazz elements. It came as no surprise that at the South African Music Awards 2007 the charismatic vocalist received a total of 4 awards, including the key categories "Album of The Year", Artist Of The Year" and "Contemporary Jazz Album Of The Year". UK music magazine "Songlines" praised the unique crossover of pop, jazz and soul : "A talent to rival Lauryn Hill, India Arie, Erykah Badu ? Without a doubt. Simphiwe Dana has a voice that pulls you up short."
Press Quotes:
Winner of four South African Music Awards, including "Album of the Year" and "Artist of the Year"
Nominated for the BBC World Music Award
Musikmarkt 44/07:
"This South African lady is certain to draw the attention of the international media."
Elle 12/07:
"Some voices can tell stories. Simphiwe Dana's voice tells the history of an entire culture."
AUDIO 11/07: Pop CD of the Month
"Simphiwe Dana converges music from the widest variety of cultural spheres with a big, warm embrace. African music, but black music with an open mind to the world. Strong in sound with a captivating virtuosity."
Die Zeit 10/07:
"The future."
Jazzthing/Blue Rhythm 08/07:
"The most beautiful voice in the up-and-coming generation from South Africa already radiates calmly composed maturity on her second album. Wonderful team playing on the part of the concert grand, the choir voices, gentle bass patriarchs, an understated guitar now and then, and that bewitching, sepia-toned voice."
Rolling Stone 11/07:
"This is the first Xhosa female vocalist who can match the all but oppressing presence of Miriam Makeba with a sovereignly held pulse of her own."
Financial Times 10/07:
"A musical stroke of luck whose magic, ingeniousness and intuition leaves not only the African competition miles behind."
Stern.de 02/08:
"Simphiwe Dana is surely one thing: the most significant export hit from South Africa since the great Miriam Makeba."
Vogue 02/08:
"Poetry in Xhosa. With her blend of Soul, Jazz and Pop, Simphiwe Dana is 'the' new voice from South Africa."
Jazzthetik 12/07:
"Hectic seems to be a foreign word on this recording. Dana sings with a velvety voice. She relaxes to the soaring sounds and backing-choir voices on the songs whose African roots go deep yet integrate Soul and Jazz so lightheartedly."
