David Friedman : Rodney's Parallel Universe |
 |
| |
The trio expanded their cast for "Rodney's Parallel Universe" by adding a flamboyant guest soloist, accordion virtuoso Jean Louis Matinier. Now enhanced by an instrument that can deliver feature solos as well as rhythmical accompaniment, the musical suspense in Tambour's work once again leads into a new dimension. The quartet's collective improvisations alternate with electrifying dialogs between individual instruments and poetic reflections. Especially interesting in this context that David Friedman has recalled his love affair of yore with the marimba. After a period of constrained silence, the instrument has been granted renewed room to breathe aloud on a release. Since the quartet has never played together before in this formation, it is absolutely fascinating to watch how the depths of space and time were plumbed. When listening to the music, you can't help being drawn into a universe of visual associations.
