Simphiwe Dana : Zandisile |
 |
| |
Stylistically scaled between Soul, Jazz, Gospel, Hip Hop and traditional A Capella choirs, "Zandisile" took her from highly acclaimed newcomer to star in one leap. At the South African Music Awards she won the categories "Best Newcomer" and "Best Jazz Vocal Album" with it. All of the songs were written by Simphiwe Dana, some of them jointly with such major names in the South African biz as producer Thapelo Khomo, or Carlo Mombelli, numbered among the country's top bass players. Other prominent artists to be found on "Zandisile" include Victor Masondo on bass, formerly producer for Miriam Makeba and drummer Isaac Mtshali, whose virtuosity was heard on Paul Simon's "Graceland".

ROLLING STONE 8/06, Lead article of the Global Village section:
"A new Black Music from Johannesburg aside from Kwaito. Dana banks on Afro-Soul coupled with House beats, but in a way that still allows for jazzy piano and a mighty Gospel texture. A cappella passages with the typical click sounds flash through again and again, then clasp hands with laid-back R&B grooves. The music works itself up within shrewdly set dramatics into horn-supported Pop hymns or a TripHop atmosphere. 4 Stars"
Brigitte.de 24/5/06:
"Long a star in her homeland. At times danceable, sometimes catchy, sometimes beautifully stately ... a musical talent." (300,000 users per month)
Vogue 06/06:
"This South African vocalist achieved platinum in her homeland with this fusion of Jazz, Pop, African rhythms and song."
INMUSIC 06/06:
"6 Stars, Highest Rating: Super album from female vocalist Simphiwe Dana. With her fabulous Soul voice and the lightly funky sound, she is treading the path left by the great Erykah Badu. A real inside tip."
Ajour 04/06:
"Cool sounds. She is the new star on the African music scene."
style & family tunes 06/06:
"People with an open ear for the music of Cassandra Wilson, Hugh Masekela, Sade, Terry Callier or Nina Simon are going to be very happy to hear Simphiwe Dana's album ... an outstanding debut!"
AUDIO 07/06:
"Inside Tip of the Month - Fine World Music style mix."
Stereoplay 06/06:
"... a captivating album that unites sounds from the electronics scene - pleasingly low on clichés - with improvisation and Gospel-inspired vocal sovereignty."
Jazzthetik 06/06:
"Vocalist Simphiwe Dana lets a modern and simultaneously classic South Africa meld wonderfully with each other. Bewitching and free of clichés. A real find."
Jazzthing 06:
"Some albums can be enjoyed only when the listener is willing to depart from formats they have grown fond of. 'Zandisile' is one of those. Categorizations like 'African Music', 'Pop' or even 'Afro - Pop' simply don't apply here anymore. Simphiwe Dana allows herself the freedom to filter and assemble well-known styles in her own way."
Folker 4/06 :
"A VERY SPECIAL LADY " - "Simphiwe Dana's music oscillates effortlessly and without rifts between traditional South African song, the church harmonies that accompanied colonization, the American version of Gospel, and Soul at its very best. It just can't be done any better. The speedy ranking on Europe's World Music Charts is more of a compliment to the jury than to the album. Zandisile is a highlight of 2006, if not the highlight of 2006."
Sound & image.de 06/06:
"This woman has what it takes. The fact is that Simphiwe Dana has been blessed with a voice that makes people perk up their ears, one that fits itself exactly into the genre that 'Zandisile' deals with: a mix of Pop, Jazz and Soul blended with South African stylistic elements. Through proportionate shares of House elements, Gospel components, big-band accompaniment, Xhosa structures, a solid dose of Funk and fine Club Jazz, a broad spectrum of black music for the soul is being presented that need not fear comparison on an international scale. A skillfully laid out itinerary across modern Africa."
Deutschlandradio 07/06:
"She learned about music in the church choir. The same applies to her sense of self-awareness and a humble love of truth. That separates her from her US and European colleagues of the same age group to such an extent that it's hard to rub the tiny tears of joy from your eyes."
Africa-live/Das Afrikamagazin 24/5/06:
"One of the most recent success stories of South Africa's cultural expansion with its incredible potential for creativity bears the name Simphiwe Dana. This young female vocalist with the deep voice that gets under your skin is among the absolute shooting stars on the South African music scene."
