Tony Lakatos : I Get Along With You Very Well |
 |
| |
Hoagy Carmichael is numbered among the greatest of American songwriters. Tony Lakatos has compiled many of the most well-known compositions and a few special pearls of song into an homage to Hoagy for his SKIP debut album. As a rhythm section, with bass-player George Mraz and Adam Nussbaum on drums he discovered two top-notch American musicians whose simultaneously melodic and rhythmic styles give him the elbow room to do without a piano. Needless to say, a spectacular highlight on the recordings are three pieces with the legendary 78-year-old Jazz vocalist Jimmy Scott, who has recorded here for the first time for a label outside the USA. Though his inimitable style gives rise to puzzled looks on some listeners' faces, others regard him as the greatest Jazz vocalist of all time. His contribution to this tribute to Hoagy Carmichael are one-of-a-kind versions of "Stardust", "Skylark" and "The Nearness Of You", love-and-pain renditions that in all probability won't leave a dry eye in the house.
