Peter Fessler : Landscape Tapestry |
 |
| |
In his own words, Fessler views himself as working in the tradition of European Song, the unique classic "Lieder" song cycles of a Schumann, Schubert or Brahms, not to mention the etudes of Johann Sebastian Bach.
Topping that off, this child of the closing 20th century was marked by one of the greatest music genres of that era, Jazz, and inspired by the lightness of Bossa Nova and the driving tristesse that Brazilian sounds have brought to many a cultural circle. On "Landscape Tapestry" all these influences converge in an absolutely one-of-a-kind style he is presenting in his most personal album to date.
You'll never hear a jazzier version of the traditional "Greensleeves" than his rendition; Jobim's "Wave" is rediscovered in a vocal tour de force; and on "Autumn Leaves", instruments are unpacked that you won't find in a music dictionary, except maybe under the mystery of vocal chords.
It's not a cover, not a copy you're hearing as they sing, phrase and swing along. This is the real thing, an original work.
