Omar Sosa : Prietos |
 |
| |
With "Prietos", the continuation and, for the time being, final phase of his spectacular large ensemble project, Omar Sosa is forging ahead with his extroverted musical crusade by additionally weaving nuances from North and West Africa into his eclectic tapestry of jazz, hip-hop, salsa and classical elements. The result is a session of paramount virtuosity combining nearly forty musicians from ten countries: a unique melange par excellence, and "World Music" in the truest sense of the term.
The Spanish word "prieto" translates to "really black". Omar Sosa uses this title to describe the fact that he has merged a variety of black cultures on this album, all of which had in his oppinion their embryonic start from the selfsame "Mother Africa". In transposing this primal vision, the Cuban has arranged an explosive mix of sounds from Cuba, Morocco, Ecuador, Venezuela, Brazil, Burkina Faso, the Cote d'Ivoire and the USA, a multiphonic carpet that smolders beneath his captivating style on piano.
Press Quotes:
Jazzthing :
"Prietos is a wildly dynamic, at times hermetic combination of urban sound influences, Caribbean rhythmic patterns and African 'Post-Folklore'. Solidly convincing!"
Stereo :
"A fireworks display of Jazz solos, horn phrasing, raps and Afro chants."
Klassik Heute :
"This highly intelligent and individual experiment is the right way to respectfully incorporate musical traditions and, at the same time, press forward with revolutionary fervor. An added note: just the right thing for all those who have had their fill of the Buena Vista Social Club - sound."
WDR 5 Radio Cologne :
"CD of the week"
HR Radio Frankfurt :
"Such exacting rhythm, such instinctively certain timing hasn't been heard for quite a while."
Jazzthetik :
"Prietos has all the makings of an exciting record: multi-layered and passionate, full of rhythmic fireworks bursting brightly in the sky."
Kultur News :
"Sosa's sextet sets fuses ablaze wherever they tread. These people don't just stand by and watch things burn: they pour fuel on the flames."
WOM JOURNAL :
"Watch out: Highly explosive!"
