David Gazarov : Black Vision |
 |
| |
David Gazarov made his debut on SKIP RECORDS as the duet partner of Robert Wolf on the CD "Together". For his own project, "Black Vision", he finds the trio to be an ideal expressive force. Together with drummer Keith Copeland and contrabassist Chris Lachotta, he immerses himself in communicative interchanges, at times emotional and charged with sound, others wistful and contemplative. In the process he also integrates standards from Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Eddie Harris into his ever-expanding repertoire. Schooled at the conservatories of Moskow and his native Caucasian city of Baku, David Gazarov focuses on the high art of "balancing the means to an end". One notices it on "Round Midnight". He spins this bebop hymn into a rhapsody, twining elegant ornamental elements and a sure hand for the appropriate ratio of fluid familiarity and tactful reservedness around the theme. The secret behind his playing: clarity and reflection merge with the impulsiveness of phonic eruptions; the competency shown in the well-versed technique of the classical musician blends with the furiosity of the enthusiastic improviser. A network of impressions and emotions is generated that allows Gazarov's music to appear to be just as personal as it is timelessly modern.
